One of the most burning questions for the traveler: where to stay in Rome? We have tried to systematize the information and today we will tell you in which area of Rome it is better to stay, where the most inexpensive hotels are and where it is more convenient to get to the sights.

Neighborhoods of Rome: Where to stay?
The number of hotels, hostels and b & bs in Rome is huge, so there is no need to settle outside of the historic center for the sake of saving money. Of course, the best hotels in Rome are centrally located and priced accordingly, but there are also inexpensive hotels in the center and you usually need to book them well in advance.

Esquilino
The neighborhood of Rome is convenient for its central location and proximity to Termini station. The airport shuttle arrives here, and there’s also a metro station linking the two branches. It is a very lively place. Buses of many city routes run from the station, and trains run from here to various points in Italy.

Esquilino is the cheapest area of the city. On the one hand this is a huge plus, on the other hand – a huge minus. There are always a lot of people here, including those from unfortunate countries. And where there is bustle, there is an increased criminogenic situation.

So in the evenings, Esquilino is considered a dangerous area of Rome. If you decide to stay in Esquilino, choose a hotel close to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Monti: Housing for young people
In this area of Rome stay mostly young people and those who love the nightlife. It’s full of trendy cafes, bars and nightclubs. You can also see a lot of designer boutiques and exhibitions. For skylarks and lovers of silence, don’t stay in Monti in Rome: there’s non-stop music and partying under your windows until the early morning hours.

It’s worth mentioning that the prices here are a bit steep, so if you’re looking for budget accommodations, consider other options.

The popular attractions in the area include the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.

Celio: Stay near the Colosseum
Where to stay in Rome to see the Colosseum in the morning? Certainly in Celio. Ancient structures, crowds of tourists and the famous “blue street”.

For a relaxing vacation, choose a hotel in the back of the block. Overall, Celio is a very cozy and friendly neighborhood to stay in Rome. If you want to meet the morning with aromatic coffee and a beautiful view, you are here.

San Saba neighborhood
San Saba is a quiet and comfortable place on the Aventine Hill. Here you can find an inexpensive hotel within walking distance of many famous attractions and close to the locals.

There is a metro station and train station in the area, from which you can reach the sea in 40 minutes. Popular destinations include Circo Massimo, the Palatine, the Thermae of Caracalla and the beginning of the Appian Way.

Trastevere: Stay in the heart of Rome
If you want to live in an authentic Italian neighborhood, Trastevere is the place to go. See shabby apartment buildings with laundry on ropes, hear Rome’s emotionally gesticulating people and enjoy some of the best pasta in a cozy, cheap place. The only downside to the neighborhood is that there’s no subway.

Prices in Trastevere are not the lowest. We recommend looking for a hotel closer to the Tiber River. Once you’re settled in, climb the Gianicolo Hill for a panoramic view, and visit the ancient Santa Maria in Trastevere church.

Parione: A good neighborhood for a tourist
The neighborhood truly consists of many pluses. It is the best for several reasons: there are good cafes, the food market in Piazza Campo de’ Fiori, and the most beautiful streets.

It is in this area that Piazza Navona with the Four Rivers fountain is located. Yes, there is no metro station in the Parion, but many attractions are within walking distance.

Trevi Fountain area
The area around the famous Trevi Fountain. The neighbourhood is very interesting apart from the fountain: Palazzo Barberini, Fountain of Triton and the second most visited shopping street: via del Corso.

There is a large number of high quality hotels and apartmenos in Corso, an extremely expensive place to live. There is a metro station.

Campo Marzio: Stay in the center
Campo Marzio is considered one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Rome. From the hotel you can walk to the famous Spanish Steps with the fountain of Bernini, the street with luxury boutiques, Piazza del Popolo, the church of Santa Maria del Popolo with works of Caravaggio and the old Greco Café, where Gogol liked to visit.

A metro line runs through the area. Lodging prices are high.

Prati: Live near the Vatican
Prati suits those who want to live close to the Vatican but not overpay for it. The place disposes to quiet walks and leisurely shopping, because there is no rush, and there are quite few tourists.

The area has a subway and a lot of cozy cafes. The closer you get to the Vatican, the higher the price.
