What We Do

The Museums Advisory Service helps museums in Wiltshire by:

  • acting as professional curatorial advisers to volunteer-run museums
  • providing training and development for all museum staff and volunteers
  • advising museums how to catalogue and care for their exhibits
  • providing grants to carry out museum projects
  • helping museums meet and maintain national standards, such as museum accreditation
  • helping museums design and produce displays and exhibitions
  • advising how to improve access to museums and their exhibits
  • helping museums attract new visitors
  • carrying out county wide projects such as setting up websites and digital photography
  • publicising and promoting all museums
  • hosting ‘Wiltshire Treasures’ a web catalogue of Wiltshire museum collections

The independent museums supported by the service range from voluntary community-run museums to those with internationally important collections.
