Lacock 'Show and Tell' Event

IMG 6231Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre held an event in Lacock in the Manger Barn to encourage local residents to share their wonderful memories of the village.  The aim of the event was to produce content, information and enthusiasm for the Lacock Community Archive.  The Community Archive project is attempting to record and preserve the villager’s memories of Lacock through oral history, photographs and documents and to share these on the Lacock Unlocked website.  It is vitally important to capture these memories before they become lost and provide an opportunity and location for them to be shared and enjoyed by the village and others.      

The ‘Show and Tell’ event was intended to inspire and help local residents to remember and record their memories.   Photographs of the houses on the four main streets of Lacock were displayed alongside information (from records held at the History Centre) concerning previous residents and shops.  However,  we provided residents the opportunity to write down their memories and anecdotes of previous, as well as current, residents.  Alongside this, copies of Harold White Photographs, who took a series of photographs of Lacock in 1945, were also displayed.  Many residents were able to identify the people who had been photographed by Harold White, including parents, relatives and various other residents.

The event proved a success with new information (especially concerning the Harold White photographs) being collected and enthusiasm being created for the project in the village.  Many photographs and documents were provided to be copied as well as additional volunteers to be interviewed concerning their memories of Lacock and the surrounding areas.

 

Lacock Interpretation Days

We held two interpretation days for the village of Lacock to explore the village on a deeper level beyond that of the Abbey and tearooms.

Lacock document research 

The interpretation day began in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives where participants looked at the central part of the village from medieval times and especially concentrated on documents from the 17th to 19th centuries – many of these were part of the Lacock Unlocked project. One lady found her family cottage on an estate map of 1684 – the occupant was her ancestor; another lady found her farmhouse on a schedule for 1804, again the occupier was an ancestor. Outside the village it’s little known that several local families have been in the parish for many generations. The site of the Saxon church and village, the manor house that preceded the abbey, the ages of the two river bridges, the unusual rectangular pattern of streets, and the possibility of burgage plots were all discussed and considered.

Photography and Wiltshire People First

Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre together with The National Trust and Wiltshire People First (a group for adults with learning disabilities) produced a new photography project related to the Lacock Unlocked Project.   Members of Wiltshire People First were shown how to use DSLR cameras by a professional photographer, Jamie McDine, in the photographic village of Lacock.  The project was held over three workshops which covered various topics from portrait photography to the techniques Henry Fox Talbot used to produce his photographs.

Group Photograph

The first workshop included a talk by Roger Watson, curator of the Fox Talbot Museum.  He spent time with the group explaining all about William Henry Fox Talbot and his early developments with photography. This included showing the group a replica of the camera obscura which Fox Talbot had invented, and explained how Fox Talbot’s hard work eventually led him to produce the negative image which became so important in the success of photography.  The final part of the first day was spent back in the Manger Barn, where the members got into pairs and learned how to hold and use a digital SLR camera and how to take portrait photographs of each other.
